When it comes to strolling across the city, Sherbrooke invites its first-time visitors to take a tour that’s both original and fun: The Sherbrooke Murals Circuit. Look up to discover 18 giant works of art lining the streets of the city centre. These giant open-air frescoes will take you on a very interesting exploration of the city’s history.
At lunchtime, let yourself be amazed by Sherbrooke’s most unusual restaurant, OMG Resto. This church converted into a restaurant will immerse you in an environment blending a religious and industrial decor. If the original setting is well worth the trip, it goes without saying that the menu is equally impressive! Try the shrimp tacos or one of their burgers—you won’t be disappointed.
In the afternoon, you’ll have plenty of options for visiting one of Sherbrooke’s many museums. If your morning stroll has inspired you to continue your discovery of the arts, then the Musée des beaux-arts de Sherbrooke is just the place for you! If, on the other hand, your curiosity for history that has been stimulated: the Musée d’histoire de Sherbrooke is there to satisfy your thirst for knowledge. And for those with a passion for the natural sciences, the Musée de la nature et des sciences de Sherbrooke is sure to please.
Because a satiated appetite goes hand in hand with a well-filled mind, end your day with a gourmet supper at Restaurant Auguste. In the restaurant’s bright and inviting dining room, you can catch a glimpse of the cooks at work across the room in the open kitchen. A signature dish on the menu, the inverted poutine is a must when you order!
Cozy, warm and intimate ... these are the rooms offered by the B&B Ile de Garde and the Auberge Marquis de Montcalm. For your overnight stay in Sherbrooke, you couldn’t wish for better! Here, the hosts love to share their passion for the region with their guests, and are always ready to offer advice and the best addresses. For one night, you’ll be swept away by the peaceful atmosphere and old-world charm as you settle in and relax with a good book.
This morning, head out through the rolling landscapes of the Eastern Townships towards Coaticook and its river. Once you’ve passed the town of Compton, take Chemin Hatley, which will take you directly to the charming Fromagerie La Station cheese factory. Drop by their boutique to stock up on a range of delicious local products. If you’re as passionate about cheese as the farmers who make it, explore the on-site ecomuseum and learn more about the cheese-making and aging processes. Psst ... before you head back out on the road, make sure to treat yourself to a hot snack by ordering a grilled cheese sandwich to go.
When you arrive in the town of Coaticook, enjoy a meal at the Hop Station microbrewery. From the outside, you’ll see the red, round shaped town’s old railway station. Inside, you’ll feel the cheerful welcome and friendliness of the three founders of this local institution. As well as tasting wonderful craft beers, the Hop Station Pub regularly serves as a multicultural venue (art openings, concerts, etc.).
A few steps away, continue your exploration of Coaticook and its history with a visit to the Beaulne Museum. Welcome to “Château Norton”! This magnificent period home is the venue for permanent and temporary exhibitions and events. Browse through the different rooms adorned with a wealth of oak panelling and arched lintels. A rich collection of works of art, artefacts and costumes from bygone days awaits you.
Opt for a restful night’s sleep in one of the unusual accommodations in the Coaticook area. At the Auberge du Changement d’Ère, you can choose between modern ecological yurts or airdrops perched high up in the trees. Alternatively, for a total immersion in nature, we recommend the wooden pods at Mont Expérience Hereford. For outdoor activity enthusiasts, you couldn’t ask for a better place to stay: there are plenty of nearby trailheads!
If you’re in Sherbrooke on the day of the solar eclipse, the Centre de foires and the Centre Julien Ducharme are offering their venues for public gathering to observe this stellar event. Plan to arrive early enough to make sure you have a seat. In Sherbrooke, the partial eclipse will start at 2:16 p.m. and end at 4:38 p.m.
While you’re in town, why not satisfy your appetite by offering yourself a gourmet brunch! Café Pierre Jean Jase or Café Aragon? It’s up to you to decide!
If you have a passion for nature and the great outdoors, then come and observe the solar eclipse in the Coaticook region! To mark the occasion, at Mount Hereford they’re organizing a special hike to the top of the mountain for a closer look at the eclipse. The bravest hikers will be able to take on these 13 kilometres from the car park up and back, with the hope of seeing a perfectly clear sky by the time they arrive.
Don’t forget to bring a few cheeses from La Station and something to drink from the microbrewery to enjoy a snack during the eclipse!
