A Getaway in the Region Surounding L’Espace Old Mill

Published on Aug 1, 2024

Country-style dining is definitely very trendy these days. After all, what could be finer than eating a delicious meal directly at a farm? To make your experience even more exceptional, why not add some activities and, perhaps, an overnight stay in a nearby accommodation? Here are our suggestions!

Espace Old Mill

L’Espace Old Mill, located in the charming village of Stanbridge-East, combines farm, restaurant and inn. While the vast gardens are tended by the famous vegetable gardener Jean-Martin Fortier, the restaurant is run by the very talented chef Éric Gendron. This perfect match produces a symphony of freshness and flavour on your plate; Truly, an innovative, high-quality culinary experience based on the principles of agro-ecology. We suggest you book quickly, because seating fills up fast!

Some outing ideas:

As for things to do in the area, we highly recommend a visit to the Missisquoi Historical Museum, which includes three magnificent 19th-century buildings: Cornell Mill, Hodge’s General Store and the 12-sided Walbridge Barn (an architectural gem).

Great cheese connoisseurs, you’ll be well served when you head to Bedford’s Fromagerie Missiska, where they make their cheeses with the delicious milk produced by their herd of Jersey cows. Mild cheddar with just the right amount of salt, soft cheese with a flowery rind and rich butter and cream aromas, creamy yogurt, non-homogenized whole milk... Indeed, the art of the sublime can be found right here!

While you’re in Bedford, to accompany your dairy treats, you must absolutely stop by the microbrewery L’Autre Brasserie. Celebrating their first anniversary, this establishment is the end project of three passionate friends who together decided to create beers that stand out through their simplicity, inspired by more traditional brews. Here, they pay tribute in their own way to the long-standing Belgian and Scandinavian brewing processes!

Bedford is definitely making a name for itself when it comes to the art of living in all its forms! Atelier Tréma is another fine example. The studio, which has been in operation since 2004, creates delightful collections of tableware with a minimalist yet classic aesthetic, as well as a thousand and one other little gems for your kitchen and garden. A real favourite! Psst! Atelier Tréma also has a boutique in Frelighsburg!

Since Brome-Missisquoi is the birthplace of Québec’s viticulture sector, take advantage of your stay to explore the Route des vins. We recommend you choose the 32-km “Le Triangle” route, which passes through Dunham, Frelighsburg and Stanbridge-East.

As for visiting cyclists, you might like to choose the Circuit du Patrimoine, an amazing 42 km loop that will have you discover the smallest covered bridge in Québec, ancestral homes and churches, as well as some truly breathtaking landscapes!

Where to sleep?

You’ll also find some excellent places to stay in this part of Brome-Missisquoi. For starters, you could decide to spend the night at Espace Old Mill, in one of La Cecil House inn’s luminous rooms. Here, attention to aesthetics can be seen everywhere!

Otherwise, another great experience would be to sleep in a vineyard. The hostel-type inn at Sœurs Racines, in Saint-Ignace-de-Stanbridge, is absolutely perfect! A magnificent 8-room home, typical of the Townships, with a vast garden, lovely forest walking trails to regain your inner strength, and still much more!

Also in the area, the Euro-Spa Health Centre offers accommodations as well. A superb way to combine body treatments and hospitality.

About 20 minutes away, in Cowansville, the Manoir Sweetsburg inn is an absolute must for those with a weakness for sumptuous settings! This 5-star establishment will offer you the warmest and most regal welcome.

You’re more the B&B type? We suggest La Maison Bleue, a splendid house in the centre of Dunham, or Le Passe-Partout, in Cowansville, an impressive farmhouse built around 1860.

Enjoy your little getaway!
