Our cities and towns all have something unique to offer you. Whether it’s a place, a product, a landscape, an attraction or an event, you’ll always have at least five good reasons for visiting them! Here's Brigham.

By Carolyne Parent

Now here’s a true country village almost at a stone’s throw away from Montreal! Located near Bromont, just north of Cowansville, it unfolds its green pastures, its vegetable fields, its vineyards and maple bushes on both shores of the Yamaska River which flows through the town.

By examining the town annals, we learn that a certain E. Oakley Brigham gave the village its name in the 19th century. This businessman of Irish descent was also the first to have received a formal notice from the Town. Indeed, he had omitted to maintain the road in front of his tannery and which led to the bridge! (Or was it a brick factory? Sources disagree on the subject.)

No matter, today Brigham is a lively little place in the Brome-Missisquoi region and an agri-food destination we take great pleasure in exploring!

Cycle the Lasso Magenta Route

The best way to appreciate the area, taking your time as you follow the rhythm of the beautiful landscapes surrounding Brigham, is by getting on your bicycles and take this 69 km route. Because it’s a loop (Bromont — East Farnham — Brigham — Farnham — Bromont), we can start out right here in Brigham. We can also cut the distance in half by cycling awhile on Route 139, right after you’ve enjoyed the main feature of this route, a lovely portion of the Chemin Magenta that follows the Yamaska River.

Admire the Balthazar Covered Bridge

A specimen of this rare type of civil engineering, most examples having disappeared, this bridge spans the river by the Chemin Léger and adds a picturesque touch to the surrounding decor. (No, this isn’t the bridge Mr. Brigham was accused of neglecting, because this one was built in 1932.)

Take your Time at Vignoble La Bauge

Oh, what a pretty place with a modus operandi in keeping with the times: a reasoned viticulture, presently in transition towards becoming organic. Here, they elaborate some excellent red and white wines using rustic grape varieties that we can savour inside a more than a hundred-year-old barn. Families especially appreciate the presence of farm animals (cows, sheeps, alpacas, and still more!) that we can observe as we walk along the rows of grapevines. In fact, we can even enjoy a picnic surrounded by a truly bucolic landscape.

Connect with Horses at Ranch Au Gré du Vent

Forget the traditional horseback ride on an old nag! Here the equestrian experience is enhanced with your own rapport to the horse. In fact, you’ll go out into the field to get the one you’ll be riding on that day, and brush and saddle the horse yourself; by doing so, you’ll establish contact with the animal before getting on. After a practical introduction to riding techniques given in the riding arena, you’ll finally be ready to head out into the forest, where the ride will be easy-going and memorable. (5 years of age and up).
