Parfois dans la vie d’une nation, arrive à point nommé une œuvre qui, grâce à l’émotion qu’elle suscite, entraîne une prise de conscience collective et transforme les mentalités. Ainsi en est-il de « Kukum », le roman de Michel Jean publié en 2019 et dont les répercussions ne cessent de s’étendre. En imaginant son arrière-grand-mère se remémorer sa vie, Michel Jean nous fait intimement ressentir l’intense accord du mode de vie nomade des autochtones avec nos terres, nos rivières et nos forêts, puis la brutale spoliation de leurs territoires, leur sédentarisation forcée dans des réserves et le rapt de leurs enfants pour les enfermer dans de lointains pensionnats.
Au début du vingtième siècle, sur les bords du majestueux Pekuakami – rebaptisé Lac Saint-Jean – une orpheline blanche de quinze ans s’éprend d’un Innu, Thomas Siméon. Quittant l’étouffante vie de colons de son oncle et de sa tante, elle est accueillie bras et cœurs ouverts par sa nouvelle famille dont elle adopte la langue et les migrations annuelles. Chaque automne, la famille Siméon embarque dans ses longs canots pour accéder à ses territoires de chasse par la somptueuse rivière Péribonka. Mais à la fin d’un été, Almanda et le clan Siméon trouvent la rivière bloquée par des milliers et des milliers de troncs d’arbres et aperçoivent au loin les montagnes de leur territoire massacrées par des coupes à blanc… Sans parler de ces hommes qui leur affirment qu’ils ne sont pas chez eux.
L’adaptation théâtrale de l’écrivaine Laure Morali, avec la collaboration de la grande poète innue Joséphine Bacon, sera interprétée par une éclatante distribution d’interprètes autochtones, ainsi que par Léane Labrèche-Dor dans l’émouvant rôle d’Almanda.
