La saison de vélo commence et pour me remettre en jambe, je me suis rendu jusqu’à Granby. Mon objectif : pédaler sur l’Estriade, une piste que j’avais depuis longtemps dans ma mire, car ce corridor vert peut se targuer d’être la toute première piste québécoise aménagée sur une ancienne voie ferrée.

Dès son inauguration en 1991, l’Estriade a connu un tel succès auprès des cyclistes que le mouvement « du fer au vert » a rapidement gagné toute la Belle Province. Suivant cet exemple, une grande partie des voies ferrées désaffectées du Québec deviendront, dans les années suivantes, des parcs linéaires, au grand plaisir des cyclistes de tous les niveaux.
En roulant pour la première fois sur l’Estriade, qui s’étire sur 21 km reliant Granby à Waterloo, je comprends immédiatement pourquoi les Estriens l’ont adoptée dès sa naissance. Quel bonheur de circuler sur une piste en circuit fermé où les vélos sont rois et maîtres! On roule en terrain plat, sur une surface bitumée sans nids de poule ni cônes oranges. Les intersections se font rares. Pour un Montréalais, c’est le paradis sur terre!
J’entreprends mon exploration sur deux roues à l’ancienne gare de Granby, sur la rue Denison Est, en plein cœur de la ville. La foule de cyclistes, en ce vendredi grisâtre, démontre que l’Estriade n’est pas qu’une infrastructure bâtie à l’intention des touristes. Les Granbyens y roulent abondamment.
Mon accompagnatrice, Hélène Plante, directrice du développement touristique à Commerce Tourisme Granby Région, fait partie des utilisatrices assidues de ce corridor vert et de son réseau. « Je l’emprunte autant pour mes loisirs en famille que comme voie de circulation pour de me rendre au travail », me dit cette mère de famille.
Les premiers kilomètres filent sur les berges du lac Boivin et de la rivière Yamaska. Nous croisons en chemin des bernaches et leurs bébés, des tortues peintes qui se dorent la carapace dans les marécages malgré un soleil timide, et des moqueurs-chats qui chantent à tue-tête l’arrivée de l’été. L’Estriade nous ouvre les portes d’une nature riche et diversifiée.
En mettant le cap vers l’est, la campagne fait taire la clameur de la ville. Face à nous se profile la silhouette du mont Shefford, qui surpasse de 400 m le territoire environnant. Diverses haltes invitent à casser la croûte au bord de cours d’eau. Des sculptures monumentales parsèment le parcours. Un véritable musée en plein air, baptisé Artria. Joindre le sport à la culture, j’adore!
L’Estriade se termine à Waterloo. De là, les cyclistes ont deux options : revenir sur leurs pas (comme je l’ai fait, faute de temps) ou faire la grande boucle en piste cyclable reliant Granby, Waterloo et le parc national de la Yamaska. Un parcours de 54 km, loin des voitures et des vapeurs d’essence, et ponctué d’œuvres d’art du circuit Artria. Un gros coup de cœur que cette Estriade!
