Under the Christmas tree, in your Christmas stocking, to offer to the ones you love … local products, so pleasing to our taste buds, will definitely put a smile on the faces of those who will receive them.
By Katherine-Lune Rollet
For an original gift idea that will have an amazing impact during your Christmas Eve event, why not place a wheel of cheese under the tree? It could then be divided among the guests (if, of course, you don’t spend the evening snaking on it!). The Fromagerie La Station is a fourth-generation cheese-making enterprise, producing a variety of hard and semi-hard organic cheeses, and sold in their shop in Compton. They are open year-round. On site, you can see the cheese factory and visit the maturing cellar; or better yet, you can have a free tasting of their different cheeses. Perfect for making the best choice for you!
Contact info: Fromagerie La Station, 440 Chemin de Hatley, Compton, 819 835-5301
Located in Saint-Étienne-de-Bolton, the Coop du Grand-Bois is quite unique. It’s a bistro as well as a mini-market and post office, a true community crossroad! Lucky for our tummies, the coop has a cook who will prepare all kinds of dishes to eat there or to take out. Lime chicken, vegetarian moussaka, veggie pâté and a Queen Elizabeth cake. Some dishes are already frozen. How about offering a ready-to-eat meal as a gift? Success guaranteed!
Contact info: Coop du Grand-Bois, 12 Rue Principale, Saint-Étienne-de-Bolton, 450 297-3787
If you're worried about what to give your 20-year-old nephew or your cousin who is an amateur of locally produced beer, why not offer them a jug of beer from the microbrewery Le Siboire? Sold at the two branches in Sherbrooke), they’re available in 1L formats. We can fill them up right there, or buy gift certificates (for future refills). What a great way to discover new beers!
Contact info: Microbrewery Le Siboire, 40 Jacques-Cartier Sud & 80 du Dépôt, Sherbrooke, 819 791-8440 #3
For your inquisitive foodie, you could place a jar of pollen from Ferme Api. Rich in vitamins, minerals and antioxidants, pollen is known to have many properties such as improving your physical performances. For a breakfast change, you can add it to your morning yogurts or smoothies or sprinkle it on salads and risottos. You can buy it directly from the bee farm in Mansonville where you can also fill up on honey, lip balm and soap made with bees wax.
Contact info: Ferme Api M.D., 390, Mansonville Road (route 243), Canton de Potton, 450 292-0037
For the perfect gourmet gift, make a stop at Rumeur Affamée. This institution in the town of Sutton, who recently opened a boutique in Frelighsburg, offers fine gourmet products from its bakery and a great selection of cheeses. The store also centre stages many local products. During the month of December, it overflows with cassoulets, panettone, meat pies and Christmas cakes. You’ll find several gift baskets on their shelves as well!
